My 1664 has had a significant oil leak and been backfiring under load for sometime. Friday became the day to do something about it. What I thought was a blown head gasket and bad rings could be something less ominous. IMG_20131101_115825.jpg When removing the head I found some of the bolts very loose. Also before removing the valves I found the gapping to be off as well. Whether this was due to loose cylinder head bolts I am not sure. IMG_20131101_120159.jpg What a mess! Carbon galore and oil everywhere. Good news is valve guides show very little play. I got the piston and head cleaned up pretty well. Lots o elbow grease. IMG_20131102_183241.jpg IMG_20131102_183027.jpg At this stage I think I will NOT reringing at this time. It only smoked slightly at startup. Unless someone can convince me otherwise. When I get back home later in the week I will replace the head gasket and put it back together. While the hood is off I plan on welding up a winch mount for the snow plow. Nice job getting everything cleaned up. You definitely had a head gasket leak. Visible in the picture. Good luck on the rering. It should help out a bunch with the head being sealed up tight.

Finally got the H16x1 back together. Ran it for 30min. Sounded great and best off all no leaks. Reinstalling the valves were a bugger. A tip for anyone out there finding themselves in this situation were the valve stem keeps dropping. Remove spark plug (with cylinder at TDC) and stuff the hole with clothes line to the point where the valves stay put(up).
