Working on getting the 1886 put back together. Top end is looking pretty good, got the broken tab on the exhaust welded yesterday (pics will follow in a few days). But I'm stumped. There's a part on the top of the engine that I cannot, for the life of me, identify. I've looked at the Kohler part's manuals online (such as they are - the only ones I can find are for a generator model...) and cannot find it. So, I'm throwing it out for ya'll to help me with. And yeah - I know - its really dirty. That's the deal - I want to remove it to clean it, but am afaid to do that until I know WHAT it is!

Looks like what's left of the fuel pump, does it have an electric one now? This one is not hooked up, if it has another fuel pump, you can remove this and plate it off, or you can replace it, New ones are available, plastic and a little pricey. Often these mechanical pumps on the Kohler K482_582 have been replaced with electric ones, the style on your engine is rebuildable but I believe kits are NLA. maybe pan back a little and give us a pic that shows more of the top of the engine.

Looks like an old Kohler fuel pump.This is model # A-236380 only thing diferent on this on is it has a leaver on it to prime the pump.

Yours was probably model # A-277539-S which is NLA

Model number 48 559 05-S is a new replacement pump for that engine.They're them new plastic Kohler pumps.

Excellent replies - it really had me stumped! Yep to several replies - The engine was replaced at sometime in the past by a previous owner - came from a Wheelhorse I believe, based on the traces of red paint (I kinda like the red accents on the engine and am keeping them - matches the wheels. I like to think of the red as Farmall Red though...). And I too believe it's an old fuel pump - I now have an electric pump on it. I'll be taking this greasy old pump off and plating it off.

Just a note of interest: I figured out why the engine on my 1886 was so oily and gummed up on the top. Who ever disabled the old fuel pump just took off the fuel lines and didn't cap them off when the electric fuel pump was added. So the the old pump kept pumping and the overpressure from the crankcase helped a bit too, resulting in the old fuel pump blowing oily air all over the top of the engine. Combine that with dust from mowing and it turned into oily gum. Duh. :wallbanging:

Anyway, that's one problem solved!
