With the cold weather I thought I would get back to sorting out my pictures which were well and truly scattered and mixed up.I was sure I had taken more pictures than what I first found and was glad to come across my first walk behind.I bought this gem at a local auction back in 1987 and used it till I got a more suitable unit. First off it was a two wheel unit much like a bike without a kick stand you had to park it against a tree or barn or it fell over.It had a gear reduction Briggs and Stratten 1.5 Hp engine on it but was still way too fast.It was also very very long and tippy at the end of the garden you placed all your weight on the wood handles to raise the tool out of the ground which because of the weight and speed made it wobble bad.The later one I took a picture of had two front wheels, looked like it was tacked on,I only ever saw the two. They were made in Hamliton Ontario, mine was after the war. A neighbor watching me gave me a fence row Simplicity which I have unlike the Universal to this day.

What was your first walk behind ? Cheers Mike

My first walker in 1986, was a model LC Simplicity. Like it right off because it had reverse, something most walkers didn't back then. I got it with a plow, dozer blade, 12" offset tiller, cultivator and couple of other things. It was just what I need to work my 12 acre truck garden. I found several more fairly quickly of different types, that worked better for some things than others. I still have the tractor, but theres no pictures of it, and its all in pieces right now. Those were the days when you could fill a pickup with tractors and attachments for $25.

The first one I was ever around was a garden all s3 which was my dads. Which I now own. My first walk behind was a simplicity fa. Bought it off ebay. Motor was stuck. My dad helped me get it unstuck and we got it running. That one unfortunately left along time ago. I have had many since then. The one that has stuck around ( and will continue to) is the garden all.

Grew up with a Simplicity back in the late 50's - early 60's (my Dad's). Not sure of the model, but it did have reverse. We had the front weight that looked like a little horizontal log, plow, discs, trailer with steel seat, and the cordwood saw that OSHA and the CPSC would never allow you to sell today.

My first walk behind on my own was a Bolens Power Ho Deluxe I got 6 years ago (no reverse!).

I picked up a early DB that someone repowered about 3 years ago for the sickle bar , after using it bought a DB 600 and another early one that's all original that needs some tlc . I wish I would have started using the walkbehinds years ago , so handy  Sorry for the crappy picture , that only one I could find

12BB01 power ho came with a cultivator. Also had a cast iron grill instead of aluminum, only one i've ever found that way, have been told there was very few made that way.
Do you have pictures of this 12BB with cast iron grille?

I also have a Power Ho Deluxe (12BB01) with a cast iron grill. Which came first, the cast iron or the aluminum?

Mine was a 1946 B1-6 Graham-Paige Rototiller. I used it to put in our vegetable garden. Awesome machine, and by far the best tiller I've ever used.
been thinking on getting one of those for several yrs, but just never find one good enough to use without a lot of work. I already have a big roto-spader for the back of my Suburban, and another 3pt one that of the older vertical engine model.

I would guess they were having a supply problem. A similar thing happened with DB at one time where Briggs went on strike and DB was forced to use a Conte model engine for a time. This is why they built the model 560 tractor with a briggs and the model 561 with a Conte. Had this not happened, we possibly would have never had the second tractor.
