Your going to need 90WT Gear oil.
Make sure you only use the "Old Style" Mineral Gear oil as the new Synthetic crap they use will not play nice with the bronze gears and bearings in your transmission.
It should take around 1/2 a gallon
If you haven't already, now may be a good time to check your rear axle end play while your working on the transmission.

The Tractor Supply Stores (TSC) near me stock 90wt GL-1 lube. ...This will work well in the Bolens gearboxes.

You might check with any of your local AG dealers.
You definitely do NOT want to use GL-5 spec oil as it does not play nice with the 'yellow' metals in the rear end.

Just changed rear gear oil in my 1556 yesterday.. I found GL-4 at my local NAPA .. It was a bit pricey,, $36.00 a gallon..But was exactly what I wanted..After a little research,,The GL-4 has a few added qualities over the GL-1 ..Like less friction ,,more cushoning between gears,,it has an (EP) rating (extreme Presure ) NOT that that matters,,but EP is suppose to cling to metal longer..

I have no TSC near me..which would have probably been cheaper PLUS on-line I didn't see GL4.
It was a slow prossess in a cold garage but as able to warm it to about 50 Degrees and put a block magnetic heater on the bottom of the axle to warm up the old fluid..Plus It gave me time to watch golf and drink a few beers...Anyway,, I found out the fill plug had a breather in it..The pin hole to the outside had been painted over..On the inside was a ball and spring and some sort of felt as a breather..
On to filling it ,,,It was very slow prossess being 90# and cold in the garage,I could not get a funnel on there..So I took a funnel and a piece of tubing and gravity fed the transfercase ,,,,,,, More golf and a few more beers.. Took a little over an hour but got it done...It took about 2 + QTS..
It was about a QT. low.. I feel good it was done,, it's fresh,,and I didn't find any fileings or metal in the drain oil .
