The starter on my 1254 was weak, so I removed it and installed a starter off of a 1050. It's spinning backwards? Can anyone explain to me what I don't know...thanks!

Have you ever had the 1050 running that you took the starter off of? If not then that starter is the wrong one for a Wisconsin engine. Not all starter generators are created equal. They have either clock wise or counter clockwise rotation depending on what brand engine they where intended to be used one.

That's the weird thing, I have started the 1050 before, with that starter/generator?...

I'm assuming both were 12v negative ground, right? If not, you might try polarizing it. I've never had to do that on a starter generator, though. I would think it would polarize itself.

Never had to do that to any of the ones I have had but the manual does say you may have to polarize your starter if you work on it or replace it from the tractor.

Are they both a Delco-Remy starter?

They are both Delco-Remy. I'll have to figure out how to polarize...good news is it now runs using a rope to start it.

According to my paperwork, the 1050 and the 1254 both use a Bolens # 1716169 starter/generator.

However, it says the Delco-Remy part # for the starter/generator on the 1050's is D/R # 1101970, but on the 1254 it's D/R # 1101875.

Looking at the D/R info, the #1101970 had a ball bearing on both ends of the armature, while the #1101875 had a ball bearing on the drive-end, but a bushing on the commutator end.

It appears Bolens applied the same part number to the older & newer starter/generators.

Is there any manuals in the manual section that has the details on polarizing a starter/generator?

Another question, when I loaded it up on the trailer the tractor pulled just fine. In high, as soon as you let the clutch off the front tires would about come off the ground. Now it does not want to move when the clutch is released. Is there an adjustment on the clutch?

The guy that worked on this tractor used to be a Bolens mechanic in the 60's and early 70's. He also had a couple diesel Wisconsin motors he was rebuilding for a customer in his shop, I've attached a picture of one. Pretty cool. I've also attached a short video of the 1254 running, pretty excited about that...

I don't know if you saw my previous post, as we both posted at the same time.

To polarize your generator:

With all leads connected, momentarily touch a jumper wire between the Battery terminal of the regulator, and the Armature terminal of the generator.

Bruce, I did not see your post. We must have posted at the same time. Thank you for the info, I will give the polarizing a chance when I get some time.
