The 318 requires a rear pto gear cluster for the pto driven tiller. There is a shaft with a electric pto clutch that comes off of the back of the hydro pump. Then there's a three gear cluster gear box that bolts onto the rear of the diff housing, prepare to pay a decent penny for a rear pto setup, most I've seen start at $800 and go up from there. A better option would be a hydraulic driven tiller, but they are pricey too.

 

The cost of either will be high, especially at this time of year.

The hydraulic tiller works better, in my opinion.

Another thing, the rear pto on 318 spins at 2000 rpm, so you have to make sure you have a tiller that matches up.

 

So I talked to a guy and he said that it didn't matter if I used a PTO or Hydraulic drive I still needed the gear set that mounted to the shaft that came out of the rear of the Hydrostat and that runs about $800. I found a tiller models 31 and 33 and they look like they're front mounts that come with the mule drive. Are these types any good and will they fit a 318?

 

The 31 tiller is for the 110/2xx series tractors made in the 70's.

The 33 tiller is for the earlier 300 series tractors (closed frame models) like the 140, 300, 317, etc.

 

To mount a model 30 hydraulic tiller to a 318, you need several things. A set of brackets that attach to the rear end of your tractor to mount the tiller. Another set that attaches to the ends of your rcokshaft to lift the tiller. And the belly mount belt driven pump that drives the tiller. It mounts underneath the tractor, and is belt driven from the front pto and uses the mower deck mule drive to route the belt.

Or you could find a powered tiller with its own engine and adapt it to work with your 3 pt. hitch...just sayin. Might save some $$$ for more toys, er, tools...you can never have enough tools. How often are you going to till anyway?
