Quick question ? Has anyone ever tried putting a grease zerk in the axle for the pivot bolt ?

Seems like it would be a good thing. If I remember correctly my 917H had one on it.

Any thoughts.

RF's have them and my 120 has a grease zerk on the pivot.

Larry, some people will drill a hole down through the pivot bolt and then cross drill it at the correct spot(between the bushings) and install a grease fitting on the bolt head. That way you are not drilling and tapping cast iron. You could also drill the axle as well. Worn bushings and slop in the front axle are common problems on the 300 series. You can adjust out a lot of it by tightening the pivot castle nut until the axle just starts to drag when it pivots. This will help the new bushings last longer. It needs to be checked periodically to make sure it's still tight. A grease fitting should have been on the axle from the factory.

I like the idea of the zerk in the bolt if it wouldn't weaken yhe bolt to much . I know it would be easier for me to drill the axle though .

A decision to be made , I do have a small drill press so I might be able to do it . I think will expermint on another bolt first. I agree that it should have done at the factory. I've seen a lot of things done in field that the factory should have done called supplements (after thoughts ) that people like us have brought to their attention.

Thanks for the input guys

I'll be doing my 317 axle before it goes back in. Bought some fittings the other day. I need to get the king pin mounts reamed out and bushed at a machine shop as they were worn about 25 thou.
