Well I have not been on here much lately because I have continued to finish my project car. I still love my tractors but having to many projects is just taking time from the other. Also I would like to have my garage back someday soon. I figured you guys are tractor nuts and restore nuts like I am so I wanted to create this post to share my project and share the story behind the dream and build.

First off I was always attracted to Station Wagons so I wanted my car to be a wagon. Second thing is I wanted it to be somewhat fast. Having V8's my whole life and having a 13 second car in the past made me think of doing something different. The V8's are great but can't get a good or decent fuel econmy with them if the car is tuned up any even if you drive them nice. So I decided to do a 4 Cylinder Turbo build this time around.

I am going to spare a lot of details of the build but be willing to share if there is anyone on here interested in 4 cyl. volvos.

First I started with a Wagon

Just your basic Volvo wagon with a 5 speed manual 2.3 liter naturally aspirated 114hp

From this point the most important thing is the suspension and chassis so I started all the body work and have replaced every control arm link, bushing, swing arm you name it. Put about 3 ggrand into brand new oem parts.

Then after completing all the body work and suspension work I have repainted it

At this poing I needed another engine to replace the original engine with so I was in search of an upgraded version of the B230F that come in it and Found a car with a B230FT ...the T at the end standing for a turbo engine.

This was the donor car I bought that came with the turbo engine so I stripped it down and sold as much as I could to recoup my investment. Ended up making a few bucks but have a lot of time invested so not really a profitable thing.

At this point I have both engines out and swapping and modifying parts so that everything will adapt, You have to cut the exhaust to clear the fire wall and relocate the distributor. swap out computers and add in a few things to make it work hardest thing was putting an inter cooler in a car that has never had one, but there was plenty of room in the front of this car.

I expect this car to be finished this winter and running around 250-275 HP sits 1.5 inches lower then stock on 25% stiffer suspension and has several other fancy little upgrades done. This will be a daily driver , often towing a trailer and such so the build was all about adding a little HP to a car with out losing any of its reliability.

Nice project, John!

I have always believed in the concept of turbocharging.

I put a turbo on a 4-cyl DOHC Lotus-Ford engine back in 1975.

It was quite a learning experience, much of which was trial & error.

The few people who knew, wouldn't talk, and the many people who talked, didn't know!

I never appreciated or respected Volvos until I was taken for a few HOT laps in a Volvo around the Pocono Raceway road course. ....The driver was an instructor for the Bertil Roos Driving School.

These things and be quite fast, I have always loved them since early 80's when they would race them and see the light weight advantage on tough tracks. The one thing I have done was major upgrades to the suspension. This won't be a trial and error for me its been a well researched plan, its been my budget and all the work involved that has keep this project going for the 3rd year now. Turbo charged engines can run very efficient if you stay out of them, my wifes car makes 224hp with a 2.3 turbo charged 5 cylinder and it gets 30 mpg on the highway.

If the donor car was a turbo why didn't you just upgrade that cars suspension? Just wondering.
Not the body style I wanted, mines a little more old school with hand crank windows, no factory A/C, No ABS. Just good ole dual piston caliper 4 wheel disk. The donor car was also an automatic super yuck for us old school guys.

I wouldn't admit to being in love with station wagons, but the 240s are kind of cool. One of the guys I work with has a 240 wagon with probably 400k plus miles on it now. I've seen a few with small blocks stuffed in them. Great sleeper cars. Nice job.

Enjoyed being able to look over your shoulder. Thanks for letting us follow along. I've had a hankering for a Volvo since I was a teenager. Back in the late 60's a guy brought in a Volvo 122S and had it painted dark grey with black wheels. Liked that car and then I saw my first P1800 and I was really bitten. Still haven't owned one but the 122S still calls.

Thanks for clarifying that, I didn't look at the cars very close nor do I have any Volvo experience. My first car was a celebrity station wagon, spent many summer nights sleeping in the back. I always loved large cabins in cars that's why I now have a 1972 VW bus. Other than cops always asking where the Mota is it has been my favorite automobile. Always nice to see someone who has different taste in cars than just the standard Chevy ford boring debate. Mine will do 55 downhill with a stiff tailwind and even if it won't start I can just push her and jump in pop her in second and away I go. Never let's me down and if the world goes to crap I can even live in her. Great work and have fun!

Why go to all that work for a daily driver up in Maine ? Winters eat up vehicles like they are candy. Spent some time up North and wife's uncle worked for the road maintenance running a snow blower during the winter. Only place I know that open the public swimming pools on the 1st of July and closes them on the 7th. I admire your ambition but from the looks of the weather you will need a snow blower on the front to go anywhere.

You out of all people then should understand the difference between a daily driver and a wintah beatah

This is my other car

She has spent every winter from 1993 to today slushing the the ice and the snow. So much for winters eating this thing up.

I love the 122's and the 164s , was never so hot on the p1800s though.

The one great thing about Volvos are they are build like vintage garden tractors., they are simple enough to repair and last forever if you maintain them.

From what I could tell in the pic's the car looked to be in pretty good condition body wise to start with. The project is looking quite good, truly a labor of love. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Neat project.

How much boost you you planning on running? Stock fuel management or doing a stand alone?

How much will that stock engine hold?
I plan on running about 12-14psi , these engines can handle up to 20 PSI with stock internals. thats pushing the limits though if you ask me. Stock fuel system will be good for what I am running however I may need to put on an adjustable fuel pressure regulator if I decide to run anymore boost. BTW I am not running stock internals in this I have the 152mm Hbeam connection rods on the way and they are rated up top 350whp.

Ambitious project. Thats a car you can't kill if you can keep the rust at bay.
I forgot to mention many things on this build but weather proofing has been one of them.

I not only put new body panels , but have truck bed lined everyone from the inside as well as the undercarriage and any new parts that were installed.

Got the engine installed last night, my youngest son and I put it in by hand (no hoist) so that has all new seals and gaskets, going to build it up from here.

Then maybe I'll have some garage space and room to get my tractors together.
