Did some digging and found part numbers for a 1" keyed crankshaft for the 13hp briggs vanguard horizontal shaft OHV engines. Briggs Crankshaft Part # 716181

In one case, I had an adapter sleeve machined to fit the taper on the inside and the pulley diameter on the outside. Using the tapped bolt hole in the end of the crank, I used a bolt to wedge the adapter sleeve between the tapered shaft and the pulley. Never moved.

 

Great question. I want to know too. I have heard about those before. I don't have any need for them right now , but still nice to know.

Your best bet is to take an engine to a machine shop and have them custom built. Other option is to have the crank turned down to a straight 1" shaft.

 

That (adapter) would sure beat tearing down a brand new engine even though it is a little pricey.

I have a generator engine also but was able to cut the end off the junk gen armature shaft. Haven't used it for anything yet.

 

I had seen the ebay adapters but wasn't sure of the quality or fit.

Also have been looking for a junk genny to take apart but I have not been that lucky yet.

Looking for options.

On a Kohler 23 I ended up chopping the shaft off and installing a QD bushing
Once the bushing was installed I drilled and tapped it to mount a drive disc

Prices on ebay vary widely, all look the same. I have them saved, not sure how to x-certain info here. Many are below $20. They fit shafts with just end tapered, not whole shaft. I have a Briggs Vanguard and the whole shaft is tapered. Didn't find one like that. Probly be changing crank on it.

 

I think that there was a couple of different diameters and tapers among the brands of generators. I have had a couple that I have removed the crank from and taken to the machine shop for my applications they we're able to cut off the taper and machine what was left to the diameter I needed, cut a keyway and end drill/tap the crank. IDK what that would cost because at the time I had a buddy of mine in industrial maintenance that had access to the machine shop at work. I no longer have that connection, factory closed, everyone was let go
