What is this & what engine?

Had this for a few years. Seat pan and engine breather cover were missing. NO numbers anywhere to be found. It has the six speed rear. Had it running a couple years ago, slight knock could be heard. Trying to figure what the engine is to see if it is worth saving. Anyone need parts? Sheet metal is good, rear end is sound, and PTO works. Help!!!

It looks to be a Briggs. Possibly a 14 or 16 horse. There should be some numbers on the tin work right under the fuel pump. There should also be a model and serial number for the tractor under the seat usually mounted to the fender pan. That is the best I can do without any numbers.

Seat pan was not with tractor. I purchased this one, so #s do not match. There are no #s on any of the engine tin.

I took a scotch bright to all the tin, hoping something would show. No go. May have been on air filter lid.

Kenny, lot of craftsman used 400series horiz 2 cyls. ie 400707s were pretty common in these, 14 to 16 hp Briggs.

numbers were stamped in sheet metal on cylinder shroudlike tinkerer stated. hard to see

Regards. George. TIP, Lots of parts are interchangeable between horiz opposed and vertical opposed. Ign, starters etc , just a thought.

P.S. Due to being a large chunk of aluminum, these engines are rapidly dissapearing to the salvors. this is a shame in my opinion, I have run these engines in HEALD super trykes for several years, and very seldom had a failure. I like the two cyl opposed engines. My opinion.

Since it has sat for so long, starter no longer works. Engine ran, with a slight knock. I will probably part it out. Anyone wanting parts, send me a PM and we will work something out. I am offering this to the forum before listing anywhere else. Tranny is sound, was a little hard to shift hi/lo, probably needed to lube linkage.
Forgot to add that the PTO clutch seemed to work okay.

I will remove the body side panels today and try to get a better look at the engine tins. Maybe get lucky and find something. I charged the camera batteries, so there will be pics.

Took front sheet metal off and snapped a few pics. Wiped areas down with a damp rag and nothing showed up. It is an 18 hp, as the decal says.

Nowhere are there any #s. And the decal says Craftsman. Was this made for them by Briggs?

Likely if the numbers were found, they would be a Sears number instead of Briggs. At least that's how Sears was on Tecumseh engines on power products.

I have looked everywhere and can't find a thing.

that there is either a late GT18 or an early GT6000
the engine code should be by the spark plugs on either side. it isnt a label. its a imprint that if you can shine a light on it just right you can it.

That is Definitely a Briggs and Stratton 18hp Opposed Twin.I've had a few dozen lol
They started to make the opposed twins in the Mid 70s with the 14hp,14.5hp and 16hp The older ones had points like the old Onans.

Casey is looking for a booster fan for his if you decide to part it out.And I would love to have those Mufflers.

Some of those are not worth rebuilding.but most of them are. There are a few models that have Aluminum cylinder bore and if they knock it will most likely be excess piston slap.
But if it's Cast Bore you can hone or clean bore it and stick a set of 20.5hp pistons in her.And drill the Jet in the carb a bit.

They are a very good running engine if you keep oil in them. The rear plate on the block is notorious for leaking oil on these.

Wow this is an old thread I just noticed the date on Kenny's post.:bigrofl:

Kenny do you still have that tractor?Casey could really use the booster fan off of it.

I still have it and it does run with a knock. I don't know for sure what I will do with it as yet, too many in line before it. Wonder if those mufflers would work on my Onan?

Kenny they might work on an Onan if you cut the elbows off and weld up some pipe but the Onan exhaust ports sit flat on the top of the engine and the briggs you can see is at an angle.
I wanted them to weld up on a Briggs 18hp V-Twin I have with a blown out muffler.

Keep an eye out for a booster fan for Casey will ya?If you find one it has to have an 1 5/8 offset from where it makes contact to the flywheel and the fan blades on the booster fan.
Caseys beloved CAT GT (craftsman GT18) is down till he finds the part.:mecry:

Thanks on the mufflers, I figured I might have to rework them a bit. Mainly hoping they were large enough dia. I hate to pull that fan off that engine until I know it's beyond repair. It's still on the tractor. Main thing wrong right now is the starter. It quit. May have a mud dauber nest in it.
