What's causing my Battery to leak?

Just went out and put gas in the 1050 and noticed the sides of the battery were wet. After taking a closer look There is wetness around the caps. The water level is good. I just checked the voltage in the battery and it was 12.5 volts.

What could be causing it to leak?

It didn't happen to freeze and create hairline cracks in the side of the battery did it? I am guessing freezing is the culprit.

Could it be over charging and boiling out ?

That is somewhere around normal.

From what I can tell there are no cracks on the sides of the battery. The source of the leak appears to be coming from both caps....

PS: the white powder you see is the baking soda I put on to see if it was acid and not just water from the snow melting.

I don't think over charging would raise the voltage any, but would just keep pumping the amperage into it. But if it's not wet after running a while, but just after sitting, I doubt it's the charge system causing it.

Now that I think about it... During the summer I think I recall it being a little wet but thought nothing of it. It couldnt be overcharging because During the summer I ran it without the generator hooked up..

I forgot to mention the battery is nearing 11 years of age

Could just be leaking at the caps because of different expansion effects and the caps not sealing like they should. You could take a little water out of the battery so it doesn't leak so easy.
